Hydroponics is the practice of growing plants without soil, delivering water and dissolved nutrients directly to the root zone. Instead of roots searching through earth for food, the plant gets exactly what it needs, exactly when it needs it — resulting in faster growth, higher yields, and the ability to grow anywhere from a spare bedroom to a commercial greenhouse.
The concept is far older than most people realise. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon (~600 BC) are believed to have used an early form of irrigation-fed growing. By the 1930s, Dr. William Gericke at UC Berkeley coined the term hydroponics and grew 7.5-metre tomato plants in mineral solutions — proving the method could work at scale. Today it powers year-round food production on every continent.

The Fundamentals

Your nutrient solution is the lifeblood of a hydroponic system. Roots need water, but they also need oxygen — waterlogged roots drown just as they would in soil. Learn about reservoir management, water temperature, and why air pumps matter.
Light drives photosynthesis — without it, nothing grows. Understanding the difference between HPS and LED, light cycles, PPFD measurements, and hanging height will have a direct impact on your yield and electricity bill.
Plants need macro and micronutrients delivered in the right ratios and at the right pH — typically 5.5–6.5 for most crops. Get this wrong and nutrient lockout occurs, even if the nutrients are present. Your pH pen is your most important tool.
What do your roots anchor into? Coco coir, clay pebbles, rockwool, and perlite each behave differently, retain different amounts of moisture, and suit different system types. Your media choice affects how often you water and how much oxygen reaches the roots.
Air temperature, humidity, and CO₂ levels all govern how fast your plants transpire and grow. Too hot and roots stress; too humid and mould takes hold. VPD (vapour pressure deficit) is the metric that ties temperature and humidity together.
DWC, NFT, ebb-and-flood, drip, or wick — each system has a different footprint, maintenance demand, and failure mode. The right system depends on your space, budget, and how hands-on you want to be.
