Growing Media

In hydroponics, growing media contains no nutrition of its own. Its job is to anchor roots, retain some moisture, and allow oxygen to reach the root zone. Different media do these three things in very different proportions, which is why your media choice shapes how often you water, which system types work, and how your plants behave.
This guide covers the eight most common media types with honest comparisons, so you can choose what fits your system and grow style.
How much water the media holds between waterings. High retention means less frequent watering but more risk of waterlogging. Low retention needs more frequent irrigation but is more forgiving of over-watering.
How much air remains around roots even when wet. Roots need oxygen — media that stays waterlogged suffocates roots regardless of nutrient quality. The best media provides both moisture and air simultaneously.
The Options
Shredded and processed coconut husk fibre. The most popular growing medium for home and commercial growers. Excellent moisture retention while still maintaining good aeration. Must be buffered with CalMag before first use.

Expanded clay aggregate fired at high temperature. Lightweight, porous, and pH neutral. Excellent aeration but holds almost no moisture — plants are dependent on frequent irrigation. Reusable after sterilisation.

Volcanic rock spun into fibres and formed into cubes, slabs, or loose granules. Excellent balance of moisture and aeration. The industry standard for propagation. Must be pH-adjusted before use — natural pH is around 7–8.

Volcanic glass expanded by heat into lightweight, highly porous particles. Excellent drainage and aeration with moderate moisture retention. Often mixed with coco coir (70/30 coco:perlite is a popular combination).

A mineral expanded by heat, similar to perlite but with much higher moisture retention and lower aeration. Rarely used alone — typically mixed with perlite to balance moisture and air.

The original hydroponic medium. Excellent drainage and aeration, durable, reusable. pH neutral if using inert stone. Very heavy, and roots dry out almost immediately without irrigation.

Compressed peat or coco-based pellets that expand when soaked. Biodegradable and transplant directly into most growing media without disturbing roots. Primarily a propagation medium.

Open-cell phenolic foam is a clean, inert, and lightweight propagation and growing medium. Holds moisture well while maintaining excellent airflow, requires no pH adjustment. Popular in commercial propagation and NFT systems.

Best Practices
When reusing media such as clay pellets, bake at 120°C (250°F) for 30–45 minutes, or use a UV steriliser, to kill pathogens and root-disease spores. Always rinse thoroughly after sterilising.
Coco coir can drift alkaline if not properly buffered before use. Soak new coco in CalMag solution and check pH before first use. Always test your nutrient solution pH after it has been in contact with the media.
For deep beds or large containers, mix perlite into coco coir (70/30 coco:perlite is common) to prevent compaction and water pooling. Good drainage is as important as moisture retention.
Keep unused grow media dry, sealed in its original packaging, and away from direct sunlight. Damp, open bags attract mould and pests. Opened bags should be resealed or transferred to an airtight container.
