Propagation is the art of starting new plants — either from seed or from cuttings taken from a mother plant. Getting this stage right means your seedlings or clones arrive in your main system with a healthy root system, minimal stress, and a strong start.
Many growers underestimate propagation and wonder why plants struggle in the first few weeks. Most early problems trace back to this stage: poor germination conditions, insufficient root development before transplant, or shock from moving between environments.
The Decision
Both are valid starting points. The right choice depends on what you're growing and what you have access to.

Seeds need warmth, moisture, and darkness to germinate. They do not need light until the first shoot appears. The goal is a root emerging from the seed and reaching into your chosen propagation medium before transferring to your system.
Soak your media
Pre-soak rockwool cubes or rapid rooters in pH 5.5–6.0 water for 30 minutes. Squeeze gently — they should be moist, not waterlogged.
Plant the seed
Place one seed per cube, 5mm deep. Cover the hole loosely. Do not compact the media around it.
Maintain warmth
Keep cubes at 22–26°C. A propagator or heat mat helps. Cover with a humidity dome to retain moisture.
Check daily
Re-moisten if the surface dries. Most seeds sprout in 3–7 days. Remove the dome once you see the first shoot.
Introduce light
Once the shoot is visible, move under gentle light (LED on low, or 18 hours of ambient). Avoid direct intense light at this stage.
Wait for roots
Transfer to your system only when you can see white roots emerging from the base of the cube — usually 10–14 days after germination.
Cloning lets you reproduce a plant with proven genetics. Take cuttings from a healthy mother plant that is in vegetative growth — never from a plant that is flowering or stressed.
Choose your cutting site
Select a healthy side branch with at least 2–3 nodes. Aim for a cutting 8–12 cm long.
Make a clean cut
Use a sterile scalpel or razor blade at a 45° angle just below a node. Avoid scissors — they crush the stem.
Remove lower leaves
Strip leaves from the bottom half of the cutting. Leave 2–3 healthy leaves at the top to continue photosynthesis.
Apply rooting hormone
Dip the cut end in rooting gel or powder immediately. This stimulates root development and protects the wound.
Insert into media
Place into a pre-soaked rockwool cube or cloning plug. Ensure the cut end is fully embedded.
High humidity environment
Keep under a humidity dome at 70–80% RH, 22–24°C, with 18 hours of soft light. Mist the dome interior (not the plant) once daily.
Watch for roots
Roots typically appear in 7–14 days. Once roots are visible from the cube base, move to your main system.
Young plants (plugs, seedlings, or rooted cuttings) can often be purchased directly from nurseries, garden centres, or specialist hydroponic suppliers. This skips the propagation stage entirely and gets you straight into growing — a great option if you want to focus on learning your system before adding propagation to the mix.
When buying in plants, check for signs of pests or disease before introducing them to your setup, and allow a short acclimatisation period if they were grown in soil or very different conditions.
Propagation Media
Rockwool Cubes
The industry standard. Excellent water retention and aeration. Soak to pH 5.5 before use. Slightly irritating to skin and lungs — wear gloves and avoid dry-handling.
Rapid Rooters
Peat-based plugs that are more forgiving than rockwool. Great for seeds and cuttings. Ready to use out of the bag — no pH adjustment needed. Slightly faster root establishment for many growers.
Jiffy / Peat Pods
Compressed peat or coco pellets that expand when soaked. Biodegradable netting means you transplant the whole pod without disturbing roots. Remove netting before placing in DWC or NFT channels.
Phenolic Foam (Oasis Horticubes)
Clean, inert, lightweight foam cubes that hold moisture and air simultaneously. No pH adjustment needed. A popular alternative to rockwool — no skin irritation, no dust.
Perlite Cups
Place cuttings directly into small cups of moist perlite. Cheap and effective, but requires more careful watering attention to maintain moisture without waterlogging.
Cloning Machine (Aeroponic)
Mists roots with oxygenated water every few minutes. Very fast rooting (5–7 days). Higher cost entry point but excellent success rates — the professional choice for cloning at volume.
Best Practices
Starter plugs should be consistently damp — like a wrung-out sponge. Waterlogged plugs cause seeds to rot before they germinate. Check moisture daily and mist lightly rather than soaking.
Most seeds germinate best at 24–27°C (75–80°F). A propagation heat mat is one of the best investments you can make for reliable results — cold conditions slow germination significantly and increase the risk of damping off.
As soon as the first sprout appears, introduce a gentle light source. Without adequate light, seedlings stretch towards any available source and become leggy and weak.
When transplanting into your main system, always handle by the plug itself, never by the stem or roots. Even brief pressure on a young stem can cause permanent damage.
